St George’s NSW pacemen Trent Copeland and Josh Hazlewood made the most of the conditions at Hurstville Oval on Saturday to have Sydney University wavering at 3-53 before rain caused play to be abandoned for the day.
Copeland bowled Greg Mail for a patient, 71-minute 17 and trapped opening partner Scott Henry lbw for five in a lively 11-over spell, while Hazlewood bowled Sydney University No.3 Ian Moran for a duck.
Sean Abbott (15 not out) and Nick Larkin (13 not out) won’t have to worry about Copeland and Hazlewood when play resumes next Saturday. The duo will be in South Africa with the Sydney Sixers – winners of the Australian Twenty20 Championship – to play in the Twenty20 Champions League.
Moran and Mail will also be away with the Sydney Sixers, the former as a playing member and the latter as assistant coach. They’ll be joined in South Africa by former SUCC player Stuart Clark, who is general manager of the Sixers.
Following their outright win over Eastern Suburbs in their opening round match, Sydney University Seconds are on target for another 10-pointer after an amazing first day against St George at Sydney University No.1 Oval on Saturday.
Nigell Cowell snared 7-15 and Josh Toyer 2-15 as the Students dismissed St George for 50, after the visitors had won the toss and elected to bat.
Openers Ben Larkin (30) and Will Hay (26) shared an opening stand of 50 before the Students lost 10-42 to be all out for 92 in reply, thanks to Daniel Magin’s 8-29 off nine overs.
St George were 6-79 at stumps, with Mitchell Edwards having contributed 32 with the bat and Ben Joy having taken 3-19 with the ball.
Sydney University Thirds are in a reasonable position to secure first innings points having made 203 (Brendan Pyke 70, Jack Hill 47) and snared 2-28 before stumps.
Fourth Grade will start day two defending 272 (Darius Visser 45, Edward Lewis 44, Alasdair Grant 41, Stuart McLean 31), while Fifth Grade will have to push for outright points having been dismissed for 63 before rolling St George for 82.
Universities women’s team opened the season in fine form with a comprehensive win over Campbelltown-Camden in the limited overs fixture at Raby No.1 Oval.
Sara Hungerford topscored with 78 and Kara Sutherland (55) and Kate Owen (37) helped the cause as Universities rattled up 246 off 48.5 overs before dismissing Campbelltown-Camden for 135 in 35.4 overs.
Stefanie Daffara, who had taken 2-41 in the Universities innings, topscored with 68 for the hosts, while Owen (5-32) and Sutherland (2-32) also displayed their all-rounder qualities.
