Back-to-back wins either side of Christmas resulted in Sydney University taking the lead, on percentages, in the 2016-17 Sydney men’s First Grade competition.

The two wins – in 50 over format – also saw the Students move to third on the Limited Overs competition (which also counts in the Belvidere Cup rankings).  

Sydney University head the First Grade competition on 43 points, with Gordon (43), Bankstown (38), Northern District (38), Randwick-Petersham (36) and Eastern Suburbs (36) making up the top six.

Randwick-Petersham head the Limited Overs Cup competition on 39 points, with Gordon (34), Sydney University (25), Bankstown (20), Sutherland (19) and Penrith (19) making up the top six.

Openers Ed Cowan and Nick Larkin steered Sydney University to a bonus point with over Northern District at University Oval on Saturday.

The pair put on a 132-run stand in 24.4 overs to overhaul Northern Districts’ 131 off 46.2 overs.

Cowan was in fine touch, scoring a run-a-ball 74 not out, with four boundaries and four over the pickets, while Larkin finished 49 not out off 74 balls, with three boundaries.

Aaron Flaherty topscored for the visitors with 40, while Tim Ley (2-14), Greg Mail (2-17), Thomas Rogers (2-25), Devlin Malone (2-34) and Ashton May (1-5) shared the spoils.

Sydney University meet Sutherland in a two-day fixture at Glenn McGrath Oval this Saturday and Sunday.
