Sydney University’s first Twenty20 match of the season resulted in a loss to Northern District at Waitara Oval on Sunday.

The off-again, on-again fixture was delayed because of heavy rain through the week and the abandonment of day one of the round of two-day matches scheduled for Saturday.

When the toss was finally made, Sydney University captain Will Hay called correctly and elected to bat. It seemed a good decision when he and Scott Henry put on an opening stand of 65 in good time.

But when Henry fell for 25 and the captain followed for a top score of 38, the Student’s innings fell away and they finished with 7-116 off their 20 overs.

Northern District reeled in the total in 17.3 overs, thanks to an unbeaten 51 from opener Jonathon Whealing. The hosts finished with 5-117, despite the efforts of Mark Cameron’s miserly 1-12 from four overs, coming on the back on an 11-wicket haul in NSW’s Sheffield Shield win over Queensland at the Gabba last week.

The Students’ round of two-day matches against Sydney will resume next Saturday, weather permitting.

Meanwhile, a fighting 113 from Alex Blackwell was not enough to collect the points in the fifth round Women’s Sydney grade clash between Universities and Campbelltown-Camden at Raby No.1 Oval on Sunday.

The hosts made 9-228 from their 50 overs, thanks to solid contributions from Kate Waterford (69) and Sarah Coyte (45).

Universities were all out for 201, with Celeste Raack (4-36) and Kara Sutherland (4-47) causing most damage with the ball.
