Sydney University’s disappointing Belvidere Cup season might yet finish on a high after the Students accounted for Hawkesbury by nine runs in their nail-biting Round 13 clash at No.1 Oval on the weekend.

Sitting in 15th place on the competition ladder, Sydney University have a two-day match against Penrith at Howell Oval next weekend followed by a 50-over match against Fairfield-Liverpool at Rosedale Oval to round out the season proper. The qualifying finals begin on March 19 and 20

Bankstown head the First Grade competition on 54 points, with Penrith (54), Sydney (48), Campbelltown-Camden (46), St George (42) and Gordon (42) making up the top six. Sydney University are on 30 points after the weekend win.

Sent into bat, Sydney University were dismissed for 199, with Nick Larkin (59) and Will Hay (50) both making important half-centuries, while Mail (34) provided the third top score of the innings. It was his 200th First Grade win in Sydney’s premier competition.

Hawkesbury’s batsmen struggled throughout the innings, slumping to 5-42 then 9-102 before an 84-run 10th wicket stand from Jay Dyball (53 not out) and Shane Mott (50) took them within nine runs of a great escape.

Sydney University quick Nigel Cowell (6-46) accounted for most of the wickets, while Ben Joy chipped in with 2-62.

While the First Grader’s season is probably over, Second, Third and Fourth grades are all bound for the finals, with 11th placed Fifth Grade looking at a numerical miracle.

Penrith head the Second Grade ladder for the Abert Cup on 72 points, with Sydney (63), Sutherland (53), Blacktown (50), Sydney University (49) and Eastern Suburbs (48) making up the top six.

The tightly contested Third Grade competition for the Mitchell Cup is headed by Eastern Suburbs on 55 points, with Sydney (54), Mosman (52), Sydney University (44), Manly-Warringah (44 and, Western Suburbs (42) making up the six.

Northern District head the Fourth Grade Reid Cup competition on 65 points, with Sydney University (53), Penrith (50), St George (50), Manly-Warringah (49) and Eastern Suburbs (40) making up the top six.

The Fifth Grade David Sherwood Cup competition is headed by Campbelltown-Camden on 64 points, with Eastern Suburbs (62), Gordon (54), Mosman (42), Sutherland (41) and Penrith (39) making up the top six. Sydney University are on 31 points.
