Sydney University Cricket Club celebrated their 150th anniversary in style at the weekend with a first innings win over Eastern Suburbs in the Belvedere Cup competition and a berth in the semi-finals of the Kingsgrove Cup Twenty20 competition.

Nick Larkin’s 157 not out laid the platform for the win over Eastern Suburbs in the two-day match at Sydney University No.1 Oval.

The Students declared at their overnight score of 4-271 and rolled Eastern Suburbs for 193 on day two, with off-spinner Will Somerville snaring 5-54 and Australian Under 19 leg-spinner Jonte Pattison collecting 4-42.

Eastern Suburbs openers Nick Maddison and Matthew Condon cruised to 81 before Sydney University introduced spin. Somerville had Maddison caught by Liam Robertson for 53 off 54 deliveries, while Pattison had Condon caught by Tim Ley for 44 with the score on 116.

The visitors then lost 8-67 as Somerville and Pattison went about their work.

Earlier, Larkin hit nine boundaries and a six in his 298-ball knock in which he shared a 108-run third-wicket stand with Greg Mail (55).

It was Larkin’s eighth century for SUCC since he joined the club in the 2009-10 season. It was also his highest score for SUCC, surpassing the 133 he notched against Northern District in Round 12 last season. He now has 4211 runs in all grades and formats for SUCC at 34.24.

Sydney University also collected first innings points in Second Grade, where they declared at 8-254 and bundled out Eastern Suburbs for 110, and Fifth Grade, who declared at 9-182 and rolled Easts for 114; while Fourth Grade collected outright points after being set 180 off 50 overs in their second innings and reaching the target for the loss of three wickets with three overs to spare.

Third Grade lost outright to Easts after almost pulling off a come from behind result.

By all accounts, SUCC’s 150th Anniversary Dinner at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday night was a rollicking affair, where many a dodgy 20 not out turned into a chanceless, unbeaten century.
