Former Sydney University First Graders Ian Moran and Will Somerville came back to haunt the campus dwellers on Saturday when Eastern Suburbs collected first innings points in their two-day clash at Sydney University Oval.

Moran, who recently passed 12,000 First Grade runs in the premier Sydney grade competition, scored 71 and Somerville chipped in with a late-order 52 as the visitors chased down Sydney University’s big total of 7(dec)-340.

Moran shared a 122-run stand with Sam Robson (70) before skipper Greg Clarence (76 not out) and Somerville combined to put the target in sight.

Easts finished with 7-345 off 98.5 overs to take first innings points.

Sydney University skipper Nick Larkin declared the host’s innings closed with four overs to bowl on day one of the Round 5 match.

He led from the front with a century on the opening day, posting a patient 120 off 230 balls, with 12 boundaries.

Larkin shared a 96-run first wicket stand with Damien Mortimer (61) and a 119-run second wicket stand with Ashton May (39). Liam Robertson chipped in with 50 off 58 balls to allow the skipper to declare.

It was Larkin’s second century in a run-laden season. He posted an unbeaten 206 in the Round 3 win over Manly-Warringah. And with scores of two in the season opener against Campbelltown-Camden, 87 against St George and 30 against Hawkesbury he now has 445 runs at an average of 111.3 in the Belvidere Cup season.

The loss saw Sydney University drop to seventh on the competition ladder on 18 points

Gordon head the table on 31 points, with Northern District (26), Randwick-Petersham (24), Sydney (24), Sutherland (19) and Bankstown (10) making up the top six.

The Students will meet competition leaders Gordon in a 50-over match at Chatswood Oval this Saturday.
