Former First Grade captain and opener Will Hay and all-rounder Liam Robertson hold the key to Sydney University securing first innings points in their Round 4, two-day match against Campbelltown-Camden at Raby Oval.

With the University’s regular top three of Ryan Carters, Nick Larkin and Scott Henry away on duties for NSW in their Sheffield Shield clash with South Australia at Adelaide Oval, Hay was recalled to the senior ranks to shore up the top order.

He was unconquered on 32 and Robertson was 24 not out at stumps on day one of the two-day fixture, with the Students chasing down 250 for first innings points.

Having won the toss and batted, Campbelltown-Camden would have been hoping for a big score at home, but Sydney University quick Tim Ley had other ideas, finishing with 5-55 as the hosts were all out for 250.

Ley had openers Damien Mortimer (1) and Joshua Clark (10) in the sheds with 18 on the board before No.3 Ryan Gibson (78) restored some order.

The big breakthrough for the University came from Robertson, who was responsible for the dismissals of both of the dangerous Coyte brothers. He had Scott caught by Adam Theobald for 28 and ran out Adam for a duck to have the hosts 4-78 before Ley collected another three scalps.

Hay and Mark Faraday (22) put on an opening stand of 39 before Faraday fell to Abdul Kherkah, who also picked up the vital wicket of Greg Mail to finish the day with 2-21.

Hay batted out the 88-minute session as Sydney University ended the day at 3-95 and an interesting day ahead.

Meanwhile, Universities women’s First Grade opened their Limited Overs season with a nine-wicket win over Campbelltown-Camden at Raby Oval on Saturday.

After dismissing the hosts for 126 off 44 overs, Universities posted 1-127 off 23.3 overs to take the points. Opener Georgia Redmayne (54 not out) and No.3 Leah Poulton (49 not out) put on a 108-run partnership to secure the win.
