A patient Mark Faraday and a lethal Tom Kierath played key roles in Sydney University’s 137-run win over  Blacktown in the first round of the limited overs competition at Joe McAleer Oval on Saturday.

Opener Faraday posted 74 off 140 deliveries and was fifth man out as the Students scored 6-219 off their 50 overs. He enjoyed a 91-run stand with Adam Theobald (43) and an 82-run stand with Greg Mail (49), the other main contributors.

Kierath, a left-arm orthodox tweaker, opened the bowling and collected 4-33 off his 10 overs as the hosts were rolled for 84 off 32.5 overs. Ben Joy (3-16) and Mail (2-6) also enjoyed the spoils as Sydney University collected a bonus point for their efforts.

Sydney University also collected the points in Third and Fourth grades, while Second Grade were rolled by 43 runs and Fifth Grade went down by 67 runs.

Meanwhile, opener Scott Henry continued his productive form for NSW, scoring 65 off 74 deliveries in the 30-run loss to Queensland in their limited overs match at Manuka Oval, Canberra on Sunday.

In the Sydney women’s grade competition, Universities accounted for Bankstown Sports by 76 runs at Bankstown Oval on Sunday.

Georgia Redmayne topscored for Universities with 75 in their 9-225 off 50 overs. Rachel Haynes (46) and Alex Blackwell (33) also made solid contributions.

Haynes (3-12) and Alison Parkin (3-32) then helped Universities dismiss the hosts for 153 in 40.5 overs.
