Tim Ley kept Sydney University’s faint qualifying finals chances alive with a match-winning performance against Blacktown at Joe McAleer Oval at the weekend.

Ley collected 4-51 in helping to dismiss the hosts for 191, and then top-scored with an unbeaten 45 as the Students finished with a nail-biting 8-194 to collect first innings points.

The win moved Sydney University to ninth on the ladder with two rounds of the competition proper remaining.

Manly-Warringah head the competition on 68 points, with Bankstown (52), Eastern Suburbs (45), Randwick-Petersham (42), Mosman (42) and Sutherland (42) making up a congested top six.

Penrith (41), St George (37) and Sydney University (36) are in “must-win” territory with eyes on other results.

The final two rounds are limited overs matches, with defending premiers Sydney University taking Western Suburbs at University No.1 Oval this Saturday and Penrith at Howell Oval on March 14.

The qualifying finals will be played in March 21-22, the semi-finals on March 28-29 and the final on April 4, 5 and 6.

Sydney University Second Grade have the minor premiership wrapped up on their way to a title defence.

Seconds are perched on 70 points, with Northern District (53), Manly-Warringah (49), Hawkesbury (46), Bankstown (42) and Eastern Suburbs (42) making up the top six.

Sydney University Third Grade are also in “must win” territory, sitting seventh on the ladder, just one point behind sixth-placed Gordon.

Fourth Grade are sitting comfortably in second place behind competition leaders Manly-Warringah, while Fifth Grade are in 10th position, nine points adrift of the top six.

Having won five of the six games at the weekend, defending  champions Sydney University (1146 points) moved into second place on the Club Championship which is headed by Manly-Warringah on 1387 points. This coveted award is going down to the wire.
