Sydney University will be hoping for a rescue mission from opener Ben Trevor-Jones and No.5 Liam Robertson when their Round 14 clash with Bankstown resumes at University Oval on Saturday.

The Students finished the first day at 3-32 in reply to Bankstown’s 291.

In a horror 10 overs before stumps, Sydney University lost opener Steven Hobson (3), Damien Mortimer (9) and Charles Litchfield (0), while Trevor-Jones (14 not out) and Robertson (0 not out) held sway to bat another day.

Having won the toss and batted, the visitors put together a competitive tally, thanks to solid contributions from Kyle Brockley (82), Daniel Solway (50), Brendan Smith (42), Benjamin Taylor (42) and Nathan McAndrew (37).

Tim Ley was the best of the trundlers, with his 4-42 taking him to 50 wickets for the season in all grades and formats.

The Students could have done with the services of skipper Nick Larkin and Australian representative Ed Cowan, who were helping NSW in their Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Larkin (85) and Cowan (68 off 89 balls) shared 115-run partnership in NSW’s first innings of 8(dec)-449 which was dominated by Moises Henriques’ 131 not out.

Campbelltown-Camden head the First Grade Belvidere Cup ladder on 52 points, with Parramatta (52), Sydney University (50), Sutherland (49), Sydney (46) and Manly-Warringah (44) making up the top six.

Parramatta head the Club Championship on 1242 points, with Manly-Warringah (1200) nipping at their heels. Sydney (1135), Northern District (1094) and Sydney University (1089) dropped out of contention in the final rounds.

The final round of the competition proper will see Sydney University taking on Campbelltown-Camden at Raby No.1 Oval on 10 March, with the qualifying finals to be played on 17 March.
