Sydney University had to beat the rain to beat Campbelltown-Camden to gain first innings points in their Round One clash at Raby No.1 Oval, which finished on Saturday.

Having dismissed the hosts for 117 on day one, when Josh Toyer (4-32), Kevin Desai (2-16) and Mail (2-21) shared the spoils, the Students were 5-116 in reply at stumps.

They resumed on Saturday and pushed the score along to 5-170 before declaring, hoping to grab outright points before inclement weather closed in. But Campbelltown-Camden were 0-18 when the heavens intervened and Sydney University had to be content with six competition points.

First Grade also collected the points in the first of the limited overs games for the 2010-11 season with an emphatic 121-run win over Mosman at Allan Border Oval.

Sydney University’s prolific opener Greg Mail began the new season in sparkling form, with a knock of 138 as the University racked up 6-299 off their 50 overs after they had won the toss and batted.

Mark Cameron and Stuart Clark then reminded state and national selectors of their prowess, ripping through Mosman for 178 off 38.2 overs. Cameron finished with 5-18 off 8.1 overs and Clark 2-18 as the Students collected seven valuable points.

And with Second Grade collecting first innings points in their two-day match against Campbelltown-Camden, SUCC has taken an early lead in the Club Championship.

Second Grade declared at 6-434 before dismissing Campbelltown-Camden for 190 at Sydney University No.2 Oval. The win was highlighted by wonderful knocks from opener Matthew Gregory, who hit three sixes and 23 boundaries in his 150, and 100 not out from Matthew Morgan, who found the boundary 11 times.

The Third, Fourth and Fifth grade matches were abandoned due to rain on the second day.
