Club Championship for water polo men

Strong displays across the grades have netted Sydney University the 2010-11 Sydney Men’s Water Polo First Division Club Championship.

The club fielded the most teams in all grades to finish the season with 335 points, ahead of UNSW -Wests on 323 points.

Sydney University Lions M2 Blue team went through the season undefeated, taking out the minor premiership and the grand final.

The M2 Gold team also performed  well, finishing the season in third position.

In the M3 competition both the Blue and Gold teams made the finals, only to be defeated by the eventual premiers – Sydney Northern Beaches.

The Lions M5 White Division team finished the season in a respectable fifth position.

In the M6 White Division, the men’s team has had another excellent season so far, finishing the regular season in second position. Having won their quarter-final last week, they are up against Cronulla in a semi-final next week.

The Under 20 men’s team won the coveted Col Smee trophy for the NSW Championship. Despite the team not regularly playing together in a designated competition, they entered the competition as favourite (after winning a silver medal the previous year) and they did not disappoint, really turning it on in the finals games.

In the Under 18’s competition, University will play a semi-final this week against Hunter, after finishing the season in fourth position.

Two Sydney University teams were entered into the Under 16 competition, with the Blue team finishing the regular season in third position and the Gold team in eighth. The Blue team will face Hunter in a semi-final this week. The Under 16’s will also compete in the NSW Club Championships this weekend.

After a successful NSW Championships for the Under 14’s earlier this season, the team narrowly missed out on making the finals, finishing the season in fifth place.

A number of players have since gone on to represent NSW at the National Under 20 Championships with the Blue Team (Anthony Hrysanthos , Clayton Whittaker, Tom Kearns  and Mark Sindone) convincingly winning the gold medal and the Waratahs Team (Ben Goldstein, Jayden Basha, Reed Cotterill and Paul Peters ) being defeated by one goal in the bronze medal game. Jeremy Davie and Lintyn Basha were unavailable for NSW selection due to respective university commitments and injury.

Meanwhile, in the National Water Polo League the men’s team sit in second position behind Fremantle after a successful Adelaide and Victoria road trip, where they played a gruelling seven games in 11 days.
