Brydens Sydney Uni Soccer Football club women, last night became champions of the 2016 PS4 NPL First Grade competition, claiming back to back titles. After a monumental season, where the club were named premiers, finishing at the top of the ladder as well as being named club champions, the team have now secured the triple title.
This combined result is truly history making, but it didn’t come easy for the Students. In what was a hard fought victory at Valentine Sports Park, Sydney Uni won 2-1 in extra time. Having opened up a 1-0 lead in the first half through a superb Emma Stanbury goal, they were pegged back to 1-1 in the second half. The students were then reduced to 10 players after a send off, and survived shots that hit the crossbar and the left post before the end of regular time expired. They entered extra time exhausted but managed to find a miraculous winner deep into the second period of extra time through a Hannah Bacon goal, having also hit the crossbar and upright themselves. The girls held on for an incredible win, and were deserved champions.
The Students earnt their grand final berth with a 3-2 major semi-final win over the same team, North West Sydney Koalas, who later beat off Manly United FC for a chance at a re-match, however Sydney Uni were too determined on all occasions.
This latest triumph backs up the inaugural WNPL Championship title won by SUSFC in 2015. Without doubt we are experiencing a golden age for women’s soccer at the University of Sydney, and we couldn’t be more supportive of such a tremendous team effort.
Well done to all of the players, especially player of the match Emma Stanbury, Head Coach Heather Garriock, Director of Women’s Football John Curran, Operations Manager Matt Rolfe, President Ross Xenos and the SUSFC Committee, Foundation Chairman Brendan Casey, Cam Smit, and all of the supporters that have followed the team through the season and last night.
