Diabetes NSW & ACT and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Life for a Child Program have joined the Brydens Sydney Uni Flames team to put the nation’s fastest growing chronic condition centre-court for the 2016/17 season.

The new partnership will be officially launched at the Sydney Uni Flames charity game at Brydens Stadium in Darlington on Friday, 11 November against the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, ahead of World Diabetes Day (Monday, 14 November) to support diabetes on a local and global level. There will be game-day fundraising activities and entertainment, too.

The game will also be part of Diabetes NSW & ACT’s largest community fundraising campaign, Move4Diabetes, running throughout the month of November.

Sydney Uni Flames player and under 17s World Championship gold medallist, Lara McSpadden from Newcastle in NSW, lives with type 1 diabetes and is thrilled with the opportunity to be an Ambassador for Diabetes NSW & ACT. Her image and story of living with type 1 diabetes will also feature on the WNBL program cover for the game, during the season, which starts 7 October.

“I was so pleased to hear we are partnering with Diabetes NSW & ACT for the 2016/17 season – my first with the Sydney Uni Flames. It’s so important to educate people about diabetes, and if other people can be inspired by what I’ve been able to accomplish while living with this condition, then that’s something I definitely want to be a part of,” says Lara.

Dr. Graham Ogle, General Manager of the IDF Life for a Child Program says, “The IDF Life for a Child team are delighted to be partnering with the Flames to raise awareness of the challenges facing children and young adults living with diabetes in less-resourced countries. We look forward to ‘fanning the flames’ for the 16/17 season.”

Diabetes NSW & ACT Ambassadors have a proud history of providing much needed mentoring and support services to children living with type 1 diabetes, along with their families, friends and carers.  Diabetes NSW & ACT believes the Sydney Uni Flames partnership will inspire young people, in particular, to live full, active lives.

CEO of Diabetes NSW & ACT, Sturt Eastwood, says, “The inspirational Sydney Uni Flames athletes will serve as excellent role models for the 420,000 people living with diabetes in NSW & ACT. These young women epitomise what is possible when you lead a healthy and active life, and we’re delighted to be working with them to bring that message to our community.”

Flames General Manager, Karen Dalton – whose niece also lives with type 1 diabetes – says“It was important to the club that we partner with a charity this season who was relevant both to ourselves and the wider community. With diabetes being Australia’s fastest growing chronic disease, and its personal ties to a number of Flames players, it was the logical choice.”

ABOUT the IDF Life for a Child Program

IDF Life for a Child works to save the lives of children and young adults living with type 1 diabetes in less-resourced countries.

Children living with type 1 diabetes need daily insulin injections to stay alive. In Australia, insulin and other diabetes supplies are either fully or partially subsidised by the government. In contrast in less-resourced countries, insulin and other essential aspects of care may be unaffordable or even unavailable. In these countries, many children and adolescents with diabetes die very quickly. Others struggle to survive with insufficient access to insulin, monitoring supplies and trained diabetes healthcare providers. Life for a Child partners with already established diabetes centres to support over 18,000 children in 43 countries with insulin, blood glucose monitoring equipment, diabetes education and technical support.

Life for a Child is an International Diabetes Federation Program, managed in Sydney by Diabetes NSW & ACT, working towards the vision: No child should die of diabetes. For more information visit www.idf.org/lifeforachild
