Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) athlete and current University of Sydney student, Rohan Browning has narrowly missed out on the men’s 100m final at the 2018 Commonwealth Games by 0.001.
Lining up against the likes of Yohan Blake, Browning produced the best performance in a Commonwealth Games 100m in more than 50 years by a Sydney University Athletics Club athlete, finishing 3rd in his semi final with a time of 10.29.
Browning is in his third year of a combined Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws at the University of Sydney and posted the fastest Australian 100m qualifying time, and was quickest Australian at the event itself.
Josh Clarke finished 3rd in his heat, just short of advancing to the next round. Both men will feature later in the programme, running the 4x100m relay.
Other SUAC athletes on show this week include Annie Rubie, Angie Ballard, Nick Hough, Madeline Hills, Michelle Jenneke, Ian Dewhurst, Nicola McDermott, Josh Ralph, Larrisa Pasternatsky, James Nipperess and Angus Armstrong. Full schedule here.
On Monday morning, Nick Hough has qualified 6th fastest for Tuesday night’s 110m hurdle final. Hough ran a seasons best 13.46 to progress to the final. Hough was 4th in the final in Glasgow and has some potential improvement for the final having hit nine out of the 10 hurdles in the heat.
Annie Rubie progressed automatically to the semis of the women’s 400m Rubie ran a slick 52.32 to win her heat in what was a very stylish performance. Rubie, the 2016 Olympic finalist looks in supreme form.
In other events, Member of the former NSWIS Sydney Uni Road Cycling Team, Ashlee Ankudinoff, won gold as part of the Women’s 4000m Team Pursuit. Her teammates included Annette Edmonson, Amy Cure and Alex Manly.
The Australian Opals – featuring Belinda Snell, Katie-Rae Ebzery and Brydens Sydney Uni Flames coach, Cheryl Chambers – have won two from two, defeating Mozambique and Canada in their preliminary matches.

Kane Townsend, who was part of the Australian Men’s Table Tennis Team, contributed to defeating Kiribati and Scotland in the preliminary phase. Unfortunately the team lost to Nigeria which marked the end of their campaign.
Townsend is entered in the Men’s Doubles event to be played later this week. His partner is David Powell and they are one of two Australian pairings in this event.
