The Sydney Uni Bombers fought hard, but were in the end defeated by the Balmain Dockers on Saturday in round 1 of the AFL Sydney Women’s Football League.

In a rematch of the two teams who fought out last year’s Grand Final, Sydney Uni went down by 20 points, 10.4.64 – 7.2.44.

The game saw outstanding debuts for Uni from all of the rookies and some great performances from returning Bombers who never disappoint. If the opening game is anything to go by, the Bombers have an immensely exciting year ahead.

The Players’ Player was awarded to Kyrsten Winkley who had an oustanding game, securing the back line and taking spectacular contested marks. Ashlee Morgan came in second for her fearless and tireless performance all over the park. Lara Creber was voted third for her endless work in and around the ruck. Coaches’ Player also went to Ashlee Morgan.

This Saturday the girls play their first home game of the year against the Newtown Breakaways at 10.00am, Oval No.1, Sydney Uni.
