The Sydney University Soccer Football Club’s (SUSFC) top female team has created history in becoming Premiers for the first time ever in the PlayStation 4 NSW National Premier League Women’s competition.

This latest triumph backs up the inaugural WNPL Championship title won by SUSFC in 2015.

Without doubt we are experiencing a golden age for women’s soccer at the University of Sydney, as the Club has already been awarded the 2016 Club Championship.

Congratulations also go to the SUSFC Women’s Reserve Grade squad who finished the regular season in second place. To seal the deal the SUSFC Under 17s also collected their competition’s Minor Premiership with 41 points, ahead of Blacktown Spartans FC on 38 points.

Such success across various grades is only possible with a great support structure and the Platinum sponsorship of Brydens Lawyers has spurred this culture of excellence throughout the Club.

Sydney University drew 2-2 with Macarthur Rams Women’s FC last Sunday, August 7, in a thrilling exhibition of quality football from both sides. The draw was enough for Sydney Uni to finish the regular season of eighteen rounds with 39 points, just enough to claim the coveted Premiership. The draw enabled the Macarthur Rams to also make the top four with 30 points.

In a pulsating first-half, the game scorched from end to end with desperate defense and finger-tip saves from the goalkeepers, keeping the crowd baying for more. The Rams opened the scoring at the 10 minute mark but in the 27th minute Uni equalised when Emma Stanbury tapped one in at close range after a free-kick was parried off the cross bar by the Rams goalkeeper. The Rams responded and were not to be denied with a second goal just before half-time.

The second-half shifted to a titanic defensive struggle with neither side able to create scoring chances until the 76th minute when Grace Henry volleyed one into the back of the net after a corner, to seal the eventual score, 2-2.

The Championship Series (Finals) beckons now, with Sydney University set to verse North West Sydney Women’s Koalas, the regular season runner-ups on 38 points, in the Major Semi-Final at 3:45pm Sunday, August 14 at Lilys Football Centre, Blacktown. The winner will advance direct to the Grand Final with the loser to play the winner of the other Semi-final.

The Minor Semi Final is between third placed Manly United FC and fourth placed Macarthur Rams on Saturday, August 13.

SUSF wishes to congratulate our Sydney University Soccer Football Clubs WNPL teams, their coaches and support staff and express our heartfelt thanks to Brydens Lawyers as the Club’s Platinum Sponsor.
