Sydney University’s men’s and women’s teams are still finals bound despite suffering their first defeats of the season in a tough double-header University Basketball League road trip to Melbourne this week.

The University’s women’s team opened their Round 6 account with a 73-61 win over Melbourne University before going down 85-79 to La Trobe University the following day – their first loss in eight matches.

With one round to play before the finals, Sydney University, UTS and La Trobe are on 22 points, with undefeated University of Tasmania on 21 points with a match in hand. ACU (18) are fifth with Victoria University (16),  UNSW (16) and Curtin Carnabys (15 – with a match in hand), fighting out the sixth berth.

The trip down south was even tougher for Sydney University’s men’s team who lost 99-89 to the University of Melbourne and backed that up the next day with a 91-82 loss to La Trobe University.

UTS now head the UBL men’s ladder on 22 points, with the University of Melbourne (22), La Trobe (20), University of  Sydney (20), University of Tasmania (17), with the University of the Sunshine Coast and Adelaide University Waatu fighting for the for sixth place.

The last round of the competition proper on Wednesday, May 1 will see Sydney University host AU Waatu at the SUSF Pool. The finals will begin on Wednesday, May 15th.
