Sydney University Water Polo Club’s men’s and women’s teams have made it through to the finals of the Australian Water Polo League competition.

After the final two rounds of the competition proper at the weekend, the Lions finished third on the AWPL men’s competition and fifth in the women’s competition.

Drummoyne Devils claimed the men’s minor premiership on 75 points, with UTS Balmain Tigers (67), SU Lions (64), UNSW Wests Magpies (60), ACU Cronulla Sharks (49) and UWS Torpedoes (37) making up the top six.

SU Lions finished fifth on the women’s ladder, which was headed by Griffith University Queensland Thunder (72), with UTS Balmain Tigers (69), Fremantle Marlins (65), UWA Torpedoes (55), SU Lions (47) and Drummoyne Devils (45) making up the top six.

Sydney University men defeated Hunter Hurricanes 22-10 in their Round 27 Match at Lambton Pool, Newcastle, on Saturday. The Lions goals came from Chaz Boat (5), Ryan Goldschmidt (5), Keegan Wicken (3), Drew McJannett (2), Tom McJannett (2), Zac Izzard (2), William Miller, Ashton Brown and Lucas Young. The Hurricanes scorers included Jake Robinson (5), Giorgio Alessandria (2), Lachlan McLeod, Jackson Holway and Sam Bloomfield.

The Lions backed that up with a 14-7 win over UNSW Wests Magpies in their final round of the competition proper at Ashfield Aquatic Centre on Sunday.
