Sydney University came home with gold and bronze medals from the 2024 Australian Youth Water Polo Championships held in Brisbane over the past two weeks.
The gold medal came on the last day of competition in the M12 (12 and under boys) Grand Final where Sydney University accounted for Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers 7-3 at the Brisbane Aquatic Centre.
Sydney University’s goals came from Jamie Irvine (2), George Nixon (2), Oscar Hale, Hugh Morris, and Thomas Penn, while SNB Breakers’ goals came from Brody Seamen, Darcy Jacobs and Dominik Playle. It was the third AYWPC title for Sydney University in the M12 division.
The bronze medal came in the W16 (16 and under girls) play-off for third where Sydney University Gold defeated South Australia 9-8. Chloe Hill (2), Natalia Papas (2), Tori Barlow, Bronte Faber, Lucy Davis, Mia Pallant, and Alexander Fasal scored for the winners, while South Australia’s goals came from Lilli Markunas (2), Saskia Roberts (2), Morgan Hillman (2), Jemima McEwin and Raphaelle Vasilikiotis.
Sydney University also made it through to three other bronze medal play-offs. The W12s lost 15-11 to Hunter Hurricanes with Sydney University’s goalscorers including Juliette Trbojevic Cabrera (5), Katherine Hill (3), Annea Warren, Mia Young, and Jing (Amy) Su.
The M16 Blues went down 13-9 to the UWA Bears at Yeronga Park Pool, with Thomas Ellison (3), Taj Young (3), Ashton Bo Brown (2) and Henry Garvey scoring for the Varsity.
And the W16 Blues lost their bronze medal play-off 12-10 to the UWA Bears with Loren Peacock (3), Amy Whitelow (2), Georgie Warren (2), Kiera Miranova (2), and Sienna Christensen goaling for University.
The Australian Youth Water Polo Championships, held throughout Brisbane from 5-16 January, attracted more than 210 teams from across the nation.
