A 92nd minute Annabel Martin goal secured an upset 1-nil win for 10th placed Sydney University over Bankstown City in their Round 22 NPL Women’s First Grade clash at the University Football Ground on Sunday.

The loss was a costly one for the seventh-placed visitors who are battling to get into the top six with six rounds of the competition proper to be played.

Bankstown caused the upset in the Reserve Grade fixture with the ninth-placed visitors securing a 1-nil result over the fourth-placed hosts.

It was raining goals in the FNSW Girls’ Youth League at the University Football Ground earlier in the day with the University Under 18s defeating Bankstown 12-nil. Sydney University are now third on the ladder on 46 points behind Football NSW Institute (54) and Blacktown Spartans (52).

The University’s Under 16s also posted a 12-nil result over Bankstown Spartans to move to second on the ladder on 50 points, behind Illawarra Stingrays on 53.

The University’s Under 15s also caused an upset with a 3-nil result over the Blacktown Spartans to move to third on the ladder behind the Spartans and Apia Leichhardt.

But it was the Blacktown Spartans who caused the upset in the Under 14 ranks with a 7-nil result over the competitions leaders. Sydney University still head the table on 18 points after 22 rounds with Apia Leichhardt (16), Blacktown Spartans (13), NSW Spirit (13), Manly United (12) and Football NSW Institute (12) making up the top six.

And, despite the loss, University should secure the minor premiership when they meet 10th placed Gladesville Ravens at Christie Park on Sunday in the final round of the competition proper.
