With three wins on the trot, defending Shute Shield premiers Sydney University are now a point outside the top six and just seven points behind competition leaders Norths on Sydney’s Premier rugby ladder.

Sydney University’s 21-17 result over Manly at Sydney University Football Ground on Saturday took them to 33 points on the competition ladder with Norths on 40 points, Manly and Hunter Wildfires on 39, Randwick and Eastwood on 37 and Gordon on 34 making up the top six.

Number eight Hugh Bokenham, winger Sepesa Loga-Tarogi and fullback Sam Bignold scored tries for the Students, with five-eighth Jac Lloyd landing the three conversions. Manly’s tries came from centres Ofa Manuofetoa and Fraser Conway, with five-eighth Lewis Dennett landing two conversions and a penalty goal.

The Students will meet Randwick in a crucial encounter at Coogee Oval next Saturday.

The lower grades saw Sydney University 2nd Grade posted a 47-12 result over Manly, 3rd Grade went down 29-12 and 4th Grade lost 19-12. Sydney University’s 1st Colts won 28-17 at Manly Oval, while 2nd Colts went down 27-12 and 3rd Colts lost 33-nil.

The women’s rugby Jack Scott Cup saw a local derby between Sydney Uni Gold and Sydney Uni Blue at Wills Ground on Friday night.

Sydney Uni Gold stretched their unbeaten run to eight wins with a 40-7 result. They head the competition on 34 points, with Gordon (26), Warringah (20) and Wildfires (19) making up the top four.

Sydney University Blue will meet Two Blues at St John’s College Oval on Saturday, with Gold up against the Wildfires at the same venue.
