We are only days away until the Napoli 2019 Summer Universiade, known to many as World University Games, an international multi-sport event run by FISU (International University Sports Federation).

From 3-14 July 2019, 184 student-athletes from 65 different universities will compete across 14 different sports representing Australia. Of that 184, the University of Sydney will contribute a 16-strong contingent:

  • Genevieve Cowie, Athletics (400mH & 4x400m)
  • Jess Stafford, Athletics (4x400m)
  • Angus Armstrong, Athletics (PV)
  • Catriona Bisset, Athletics* (800m)
  • Sholto Douglas, Fencing
  • Matthew Dall’Asen, Fencing
  • James Traiforos, Swimming
  • William Yang, Swimming
  • Sarah Tan, Table Tennis
  • Paige Campbell, Athletics (3000mSC)*
  • Christian Kyriakou, Water Polo
  • Thomas McJannett, Water Polo*
  • Tilly Kearns, Water Polo*
  • Danielle Morrissey, Water Polo*
  • Lara McSpadden, Basketball
  • Lauren Scherf, Basketball*

*Former Elite Athlete Program, University of Sydney student and/or club-affiliated.

Bachelor of Education (Health and Physical Education) student and current Elite Athlete Program member, Lara McSpadden, and 2019 Brydens Sydney Uni Flames recruit, Lauren Scherf (Victoria University) will be two to watch, both hoping to repeat the Emerging Opals gold-medal win at the 2017 Games.

The University’s four track and field athletes – three of whom attended the 2017 Games – will also be hungry for gold off the back of major club and representative success in their respective events this season.

Sydney Uni AWL water polo players, Christian Kyriakou and Thomas McJannett will be keen to place (the national team hasn’t done so at World Uni Games since 2009), same for Lions Tilly Kearns and Danielle Morrissey, who will represent the national women’s water polo team.

We look forward to seeing all athletes in action and will bring you all the latest news from Naples via our Daily Tracker.
