The University of Sydney recorded some impressive times and results at UniSport Australia’s Div 1 Swimming Nationals to finish with two gold, two silver and three bronze medals following 36 finals appearances.
Finishing in sixth spot overall with 239 points, ahead of the University of Melbourne and University of New South Wales, student-athletes fought hard over the three-day competition for their impressive placings.
James Traiforos stood out amongst the University’s student-athletes to take silver in the 50m Backstoke, beating his entry time of 26.63 in the heats (26.59) and again in the finals (26.39). He backed it up in the 100m Backstroke final to take gold, again beating both his entry and heat times.
For a full podium sweep, James joined William Yang, Nathan Taplin and Thomas Hargreaves in the 4x50m Relay to take bronze with a time of 1:38.95.
Other results included William Yang’s gold medal in the 50m Butterfly and silver in the 100m Butterfly, and Cormac Guthrie’s bronze in the 1500m Freestyle.
Bronze was also won by Mia Rolfe, Ariella Levy, Cara Sutherland and Sarah Wellfare in the 4x50m Medley Relay with a time of 1:59.97.
Congratulations to all athletes who secured a podium finish and also to those who competed hard without a medal placing, coaches, staff and supporters – a terrific effort.
The event was part of the Sydney Open Invitational Meet at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from 10-12 May 2019.
