A brilliant 134 off 110 deliveries from Anthony Mosca helped Sydney Tigers to the 2018-19 Sydney Men’s Premier Grade Limited Overs title at Drummoyne Oval on Sunday.
Batting at No.4, Mosca’s third century of the season included nine boundaries and seven over the fence in his 143-minute stay. He shared a match-winning 191-run stand with No.3 Matthew Rodgers, who crafted 63 off 115 deliveries as the hosts posted 6-293 with three balls to spare in reeling in Sydney University’s imposing target of 8-289 off their 50 overs.
Beau McClintock (36 not out) and Daniel Smith (30) were also solid contributors for the winners, while Ben Joy (2-52) and Hayden Kerr (2-57) were the main wicket-takers for the Students.
After losing openers Hayden Kerr for 13 and Nicholas Walker for 17, Sydney University’s middle order set about posting a solid target, with Ryan McElduff (69), Ed Cowan (49) and Liam Robertson (38) the main contributors, while No.8 Dugald Holloway chipped in with 21 not out. Ben Mitchell was the best with the ball for the winners, finishing with 4-45 from his 10 overs.
As defending premiers, Sydney University have now lost the Twenty20 and Limited Oval grand finals this year. With one round of the competition proper to be played – against 14th Western Suburbs at University Oval this Saturday – the Students need a win to secure the minor premiership. They already have the coveted 2018-19 Club Championship in the bag.
The Qualifying Finals begin on 16 March.
