Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) confirmed its status as the premier track relay club in Australia yesterday with a close win on the medal tally over long term rivals UTS Norths at the NSW Relay Championships.

SUAC took away an incredible 15 track medals from the championships to UTS’s 12. The haul included five gold medals, five silver and five bronze medals.

SUAC’s male sprint team were especially dominant winning the 4×100 (Clarke, Jung, Hough, Azzopardi) 4×200 (Azzopardi, Beck, Jung, Hough) and anchoring the Sprint Medley Relay win (Pettigrew, Beck, Jung, Bird).

The winning time of 40.24 in the 4×100 was the fastest by an Australian club team this year, with the victory in the 4×200 a very slick 1:25.07 establishing a new club record for SUAC.

The other gold medal performances on the weekend came from the women’s 4×800 (Carrier, Cubis, Blundell, Croft) team who staged a big come from behind win over UTS and the men’s 4×1500 (Burgess, Wade, Cooper, McCuaig-Walton) which was a dominant display by SUAC winning by more than 100m.

Silver medal performances came from the women’s 4×200 (Healey, Saderlich, Cowie, Jenneke) 4×400 (Cowie, Cubis, Saderlich, Stafford) 4×1500 (Augustine, Carrier, Hamilton, Croft) and the men’s  4×400 (Horenko, Raper, Offereins, Beck) and 4×800 (Youssouf, Horenko, Woolley, Raper).

Bronze medals went to the women’s 4×100 (Cowie, Pasternatsky, Healey, Jenneke), Women 4×400 B team (Bennett, Augustine, D’Souza, Lucantinio) Women’s Sprint Medley (Croft, Saderlich, Cowie, Healey). The women’s 4×100 team also lowered the club record to 45.82.

SUAC’s next major championship meet will be on December 14 at the NSW Club Championships.
