  3. Flames suffer another loss at the hands of Bendigo

Brydens Sydney Uni Flames have suffered their second lost to Bendigo in a week, going down to the visiting Spirit 67-55 at Qudos Bank Arena.

Another strong start saw the Flames take the lead at the first break, 22-17, jumping as far as 10 points ahead in the second quarter.

The defensive energy was high and shooting was on point, down by only one at half time.

However it was in the second half where the Flames came unstuck, resulting in a 10-point blowout to the Spirit in the third, keeping the Flames to only four points.

The team failed to make crucial shots and force stops where the Spirit did, which ultimately led to Bendigo’s 12-point win.

Another winnable game and frustrating loss, Coach Cheryl Chambers spoke candidly in the post-game interview.

“It’s hard losing games,” she said.

“It’s hurting us right now. We’re obviously unhappy with losing but we are doing it together.”

Trying to draw on the positive takeaways, Chambers reflected on an increased opportunity for young players to earn more game-time the absence of key starters like Alex Bunton and Belinda Snell.

“Lots of things are happening in terms of player progression, just not in the win-loss category.”

Tahlia Tupaea made her long-awaited return for the Flames, top scoring with 13 points (plus five rebounds, six assists and three steals) after four rounds on the sideline following a concussion in round two.

Alex Wilson added 12 points, and Amanda ‘AJ’ Johnson, 11.

The game was played at Homebush for a double header with the Sydney Kings who used the round to recognise women in basketball, with a number of prominent former Flames including Trish Fallon, Annie La Fleur and current Flames General Manager, Karen Dalton, taking to the court at half time for a celebratory presentation.

They will face the Perth Lynx this Saturday at Brydens Stadium for the Ladies Who Layupround, again, celebrating women in sport in conjunction with our friends at Ladies Who League. Grab your tickets HERE.
