Over the weekend, Sydney University Canoe Club sent out 10 athletes to compete in the annual paddling marathon, the Myall Classic.
The old trailer and boats that haven’t seen a competition for a good while were brought out – including a TK2 and one of the double (daddy) daggers – and road tripped up to the beautiful Myall Lakes.
Mario and Andrew braved the 47km race, only to miss the cut off time by three short minutes at the 13.5km mark. The rest of the group entered the newly established 27km Student Challenge, racing against a whopping 54 entrants from UNSW.
Of the competitors that completed the Student Challenge, Kyle and Shaun had an outstanding race, coming in in first place and setting a record of 3:17:50.7 and bringing glory to the club (and narrowly beating the UNSW team in second place.)
The Canoe Club also claimed third, fourth and fifth places with Chantal and Mitch, Matt and Will, and the presidential team, Betty and Adelina respectively.
These results meant the club also brought home the Student Challenge Trophy for the first year ever.
Special shout out to Matt Bezzina, who generously lent his two Mirage 730s and paddles for the race, and not only that, inspired SUCC’s six first-time competitors to give it a go.
Save the date for next year’s Myall Classic on 21st September 2019 where Sydney Uni will look to claim their second consecutive Student Challenge Trophy.
