Nearly two months since the Australian Opals claimed gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, Brydens Sydney Uni Flames and former Opals Captain, Belinda Snell visited a Mascot primary school to show a year-three class her Delvene Cockatoo-Collins-designed medal.

The returning Flames captain visited the south-eastern Sydney school in Mascot to talk to the students about her experience at the Games, as well as what inspired her to play basketball as a kid and her role as Sydney Uni Sparks head coach.

Snell brought some Flames gear with her which was given to students who asked questions during the visit, all while passing the medal around for students to have a look.

The school and students were “very grateful” for the opportunity and look forward to welcoming Snell back later this year.

Snell capped off her highly decorated international basketball career with a gold medal-win at the recent Commonwealth Games.

Playing in her 159th contest for Australia at the Games, she announced her retirement prior to the final against England.

Following a dominant tournament, the Opals put together a clinical performance to claim a 99-55 victory over England, replicating their success from twelve years ago. Snell finished the game with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 3 blocks.

“The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games was an amazing experience. The whole atmosphere was fantastic,” Snell said.

“To win the gold medal and enjoy that memorable moment with an incredible team was a huge honour.”
