The Sydney University Lions Men’s Water Polo team remain undefeated in the Australian Water Polo League following another successful weekend in the pool.

In game one of the penultimate round before finals, the Lions took on the UNSW Wests Magpies, defeating the visiting side for the second time this season. The Lions led for the entirety of the match and took the game, 8-6. Ben Stevenson had a hatrick in the game and Goran Tomasevic added two goals of his own.

The Lions then came up against the Drummoyne Devils in their second game. The Lions had a great start, leading 7-2 early in final quarter. However the Devils made a game of it, with a run of 4 goals late in the game. With experience on their side, the Lions were able to hold on, finishing the game 8-6. Thomas Kearns and Ben Stevenson both scored two goals in the match. The win secured the minor premiership for the Sydney University Lions with one round remaining.

A much younger Lions Australian Women’s Water Polo League team fell short of the UNSW Wests Killer Whales 7-5 in round ten. Without Vice Captains Isobel Bishop and Hannah Buckling, the team battled away for all four quarters with some great play, however UNSW were too strong. A double from Danielle Williams and Emma Lewis were not quite enough to get the young group over the line.

Congratulations to U16’s Aspen Henderson and Dallas Lowry on making their Australian Water Polo League debut. Both the girls played a bit over a quarter each and did really well.

In the Lions second game of the weekend, Drummoyne got their revenge after the Lions 10-8 victory earlier in the season to claim an 8-4 win. Scores locked at 4-4 at half time saw the Lions in a good position with still a half of Waterpolo to be played. However the Devils experience allowed them to swing the momentum and got them over the line.

Grace Coleman also made her AWL debut in the second game of the round and found herself in the water a few times across the game.

Both teams will be back in action for the final regular season round this weekend.  On Friday night the women’s game is at 7:30pm and the men’s is at 9pm at Peter Montgomery Pool (SUSAC) against the Adelaide Jets.

In the second game of the round both team’s take on the Hunter Hurricanes at 2pm (women’s) and 3:15pm (men’s) on Sunday 29th April at Peter Montgomery Pool.
