Two of Sydney University Sport’s long-term Australian representatives were named Female and Male Blues of the Year at the annual awards dinner held in McLaurin Hall on Saturday night.

Belinda Snell, who has been a member of the Australian women’s basketball team, the Opals, since 2003, and Nick Phipps, who has 58 rugby union Test caps for the Wallabies were among 22 sportsmen and women to receive their Blues for 2017.

Snell, the Female Blue of the Year, first played for the Sydney Uni Flames in the 2004-05 Women’s National Basketball League season when she was named in the WNBL’s All-Star Five. She returned last season to captain the Flames to their first WNBL title and is leading the way again in the 2017-18 season.

Her stellar career includes silver medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, a gold medal at the 2006 Commonwealth Games, a gold medal at the 2006 World Championships and a bronze medal at the 2014 World Championships.

She has also played professionally in Italy, Russia, Spain and France.

A Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Sports Coaching) student, Snell is pushing for back-to-back titles for the Flames and a recall to the Opals for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.

Halfback Phipps is a product of SUFC’s Colts production line and was a member of the 2009 and 2010 Shute Shield premiership teams.

He debuted on the international stage as part of the Australian Sevens side in the 2009-10 Sevens World Series and was part of the Australian Sevens side that won silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

He followed those years with a standout 2011 season in the 15-a-side format when his performances earned him dual honours as Super Rugby’s Australian Rookie of the Year and Melbourne Rebels Player of the Year. That resulted in a call up to international level. He made his Wallabies debut in 2011 against Samoa and landed a spot in the side for that year’s Rugby World Cup.

A Masters of International Business student, having previously completed a Bachelor of Business at UTS, Phipps has 109 Super Rugby caps, including 47 with the Melbourne Rebels and 62 with the NSW Waratahs.

Summing up the awards evening, the president of the Blues Association, Clive Cooper, said earning a Blue or a Gold from the University of Sydney is an incredible honour and achievement for any athlete or administrator.

“It is a lot harder to wear a blue from Sydney University than at Oxford or Cambridge universities where the Blues tradition started,” he said.

Mr Cooper also made special mention to four Blues in attendance who were the first sporting Blue winners in their respective sports at the university.

They included Caroline Houghton a 1986 Blue in canoe, Rosilind Fischi, a 1964 Blue in gold, Derek Hynd, a 1977 Blue in surfing; and Scott Buckingham, a 1991 Blue in board sailing.

The Blues were awarded by David Mortimer AO, a member of the University Senate.
