Leg-spinner Devlin Malone was enjoying a fine spell of bowling against Sydney at Sydney University Oval on Saturday when rain rescued the visitors.

Brought into the attack as a fifth choice threat, Malone had taken 4-45 off 15 tidy overs when rain caused the match to be abandoned.

At that stage Sydney were 5-192 in reply to Sydney University’s (8(dec)-351.

The rain not only thwarted Malone from taking a ‘bagful’, it also cost the Students a chance of first innings points and the competition lead.

The defending premiers are now third on the competition ladder on 25 points, behind Campbelltown-Camden (26) and  Eastern Suburbs (25), with Randwick-Petersham (25), Sutherland (24) and Parramatta (21) making up the top six after six rounds of the premier Sydney competition.

Sydney University’s big first day total was garnered by the efforts of Steven Hobson (109), Tim Cummins (79 not out), Ben Trevor-Jones (41), Damien Mortimer (35), Hayden Kerr (32) and Liam Robertson (26).

Resuming on day two, Sydney were travelling well at 1-68 before Malone entered the fray. He trapped opener Justin Mosca lbw for 40 and had No.1 Tristen McDonald caught by Joe Kershaw for 60.

He then trapped Anthony Mosca lbw for five and had Delray Rawlins stumped by Tim Cummins for a duck. Malone had the tail in his sights when cruelled of a big payday.

Sydney collected first innings points in Second Grade; the rain forced draws in Third and Fourth grades; and Sydney University earnt first innings points in Fifth Grade.

SUCC now lie fourth on the Club Championship on 451 points, behind Parramatta (551), Manly-Warringah (523) and Sydney (511).

Rounds 7 and 8 will be limited overs rounds, with Sydney University Firsts taking on Northern District at Mark Taylor Oval this Saturday and Fairfield-Liverpool at Rosedale Oval on December 16. The competition will then break for Christmas and resume on January 6, 2018.
