Sydney University skipper Nick Larkin’s sparkling 140 at University Oval at the weekend has put the team in a dominant position to collect the points against Hawkesbury when the two-day encounter resumes on Saturday.

The NSW opener cracked 21 boundaries and a six in his 137-ball stay which included a 173-run first wicket partnership with Damien Mortimer (53).

It was Larkin’s 13th century in a run-laden career for the University. He now has 6367 runs for the Students, including a career best 206 against Manly-Warringah last season.

After setting the pace from the top, the rest of the Students’ batting order responded, with Ben Trevor-Jones (68) continuing a  strong start to the season, keeper Tim Cummins (41), and quicks Joe Kershaw (24) and Dugald Holloway (24) allowing the skipper to declare at 9-397.

Kershaw then claimed two quick wickets and Ben Joy claimed one to have the visitors 3-24 at stumps.

While Larkin was making hay at University Oval, Steven Hobson was making his mark in the Second Grade fixture at Owen Earle Oval where he posted an unbeaten 229, his second double century for the Students and his 11th since arriving at the club in the 2011-12 season.

Batting at No.3, Hobson put on 231 for the first wicket with opener Charles Litchfield, who fell six short of a century.

Hobson hit 27 boundaries and fix sixes in his 350-minute occupation, backing up his 105 against Western Suburbs in the previous round. He now has 3153 runs in all grades for the Students at a healthy 38.45.

Seconds declared a 6-420 and had Hawkesbury 3-11 at stumps on day one.
