A host of past and present Elite Athlete Program members were honoured for their sporting accomplishments and academic pursuits at the 2015 NSWIS Awards on Thursday, 19 November.
Among the award winners on the night, hurdler Nicholas Hough won two awards – the Academic Excellence award for the University of Sydney and the Commonwealth Bank Excellence in Vocation and Sport prize.
Hough is an Elite Athlete Program member studying a Bachelor of Information Technology. Incredibly it was the third year in a row that the Bella Vista based Rio Olympic hopeful has claimed the Sydney Uni academic award.
Overlooking the spectacular backdrop of the Sydney Cricket Ground, the awards provided the perfect opportunity to recognise the strength and breadth of our Elite Athlete Program, with finalists from a number of disciplines including:
- Cameron Girdlestone, Elite Athlete Program rowing alumnus, Bachelor of Education (Sec: Human Movement/Health Ed) (2011) – finalist for NSWIS Male Athlete of the Year.
- Roslyn Lawrence, Elite Athlete Program canoe slalom alumnae, Bachelor of International and Global Studies (2013); Jessica Fox, Elite Athlete Program canoe slalom alumnae; and Noemi Fox, Elite Athlete Program canoe slalom member, Bachelor of Arts (Media and Communications) – three members of the Canoe Slalom program nominated for NSWIS Program of the Year.
- Melissa Perrine, USYD alumnae, Master of Exercise and Sport Science (2012) and Madeline Heiner, Elite Athlete Program alumnae, Bachelor of Pharmacy (2008) – finalists for the NSWIS Regional Athlete of the Year.
Congratulations to all of our athletes for their outstanding efforts balancing study and competition over the past 12 months.
