Sydney University Lions and Norwest Polecats fought out a 16-all draw in a tough Round 4 Division 1 Tertiary Cup Rugby League clash at Marrickville Oval on Saturday.

The Lions got off to a horror start when the ball went dead in goal off the kick-off, resulting in a goal line drop out. Norwest capitalise on the error by scoring an early try to lead 4-0 two minutes into the game.

The Lions looked to bounce straight back and some clever play found space on the right edge for Ryan Barton to score and level the scores at 4-4. The scoreline remained unchanged until the half-time break.

In the second half the Lions were looking good in the trade of sets and came close to scoring on several occasions. However, it was the visitors who scored a further two tries to take a 16-4 lead with 20 minutes to play.

With the big boys leading the charge the Lions posted back-to-back tries to level the scores. The first came from Kingi Ngatai, who was able to bring his skills into play after a solid build-up. Joe Andrews’ conversion put the Lions back within striking distance.

Minutes later some great play resulted in EAP scholarship holder Jake Vrahnos scoring a try close to the posts. Andrews converted to level proceedings set up a grand finale.

Unfortunately for the Lions it ended in a draw but the team remained positive in the final stages to earn a valuable point.

In Division 2, Norwest Polecats prevailed 24-22 after the Lions had fought back from an 18-4 halftime deficit. Nona Suma put the Lions on the board with a great try just before the break.

After some stern words from coach Tony Farr, the Lions rectified their first half errors in attack and defence to work their way back into contention in the second half.

Caine Trindall, Dean Reid scored tries and Suma grabbed a second as the Lions stormed back into the match only to fall two points short.

Round 5 will be played on Saturday, May 23 when First Division will take on the University of Western Sydney Ducks at Bankstown Campus Oval kicking off at 3pm, while Second Division will take on the Australian Catholic University at Marrickville Oval starting at 1.15pm.

The one-week break in the competition is to cater for the annual City v Country clash which will be played at North Sydney Oval this Saturday with a 1pm kick-off.

The annual clash provides an opportunity for some of the best players from the NSW Tertiary Student League competition to battle it out for the City/Country Shield.

Sydney University Lions have seven representatives in the City team in Adam Hansen, Jay Parker, Morrison Mong, Junior Taupo, Myles Fowler, Scott Bunch and Jake Vrahnos.
