Sydney University fullback Henry Clunies-Ross scored two of his team’s 10 tries in their 62-5 win over Penrith at Nepean Rugby Park on Saturday.

The Students opened the 2015 Shute Shield season with a clean-sweep of the four grade and three Colts matches.

Outside-centre Jim Stewart set the standard three minutes into the main game when he shrugged off several defenders to score. The Students attacked from all quarters for the rest of the game.

Prop Ally Ryan, Clunies-Ross and winger Mark O’Dare, making his debut in the top grade, helped set up a 29-nil lead at the break.

Clunies-Ross and number eight Jake Wainwright bagged early second-half tries, while halfback Jock Merriman, five-eighth Jack Macklin, winger Dane McCarthy, flanker David Hickey and centre James McMahon, who replaced captain Tom Carter, kept the scoreboard ticking over. Winger Sione Pusi’aki Fifita scored the Emus’ only try.

Sydney University will meet Eastern Suburbs this Saturday, with all grade and Colts games being held at Bowral Rugby Club in the Southern Highlands

Easts will be fired up, coming off an 18-9 loss to Gordon in their season opener at Woollahra Oval.

Sydney University’s Round 3 match will be against Gordon at Chatswood Oval. On April 4, with the club’s first home game against Manly on April 11.
