Sydney Uni Men’s 1sts Hockey team used the early March Ryde preseason tournament as ideal preparation for the commencement of the SHA competition.
Director of Hockey, Scott Barker (who was HNSW’s Coach of the Year in 2014) and the leadership group worked on some key focus points for the tournament, and the team applied them well. At the end of the competition on Saturday (day 1) the team had a win (v UNSW) and a draw (v Briars). This meant that the Sunday game turned into a semi-final with the winner going directly to the final.
After a tough physical game Sydney Uni were able to hold out for a 4-3 victory over GNS. Given the way the other pool panned out, the team faced GNS again in the final. Sydney Uni held on again and went on to secure a 2-0 win and the tournament.
Winning this tournament reinforces that Sydney Uni can match any team in the competition.
