Opener Scott Henry’s patient 105 helped Sydney University to a healthy 7-302 at stumps on the first day of their Round 3, two-day clash with Bankstown at Bankstown Memorial Oval on Saturday.

The NSW representative faced 208 balls in his 266-minute occupation and cracked 11 boundaries and two sixes along the way.

Henry shared an 82-run opening stand with Nick Larkin (38) and a 102-run stand with No.5 Greg Mail (67) before he was caught by Daniel Solway off the bowling of Mitchell Phelps. Phelps ended the day with 4-63 off 22 overs.

It was Henry’s fourth century for the club and took him to 3535 runs in all forms of the game in his sixth season with the Students.

With the dangerous Tim Ley still at the crease on 39 off 45 balls, skipper Mail might push for some more quick runs when play resumes next Saturday.

Sydney University Seconds are well-placed going into day two of their tilt with Bankstown at University No.1 Oval. The hosts were rolled for 208 after winning the toss and batting, but had Bankstown 3-31 at stumps, with spinner Tom Kierath snaring 2-2.

Third Grade batted out the day to be 8-265 at stumps at Jensen Park, where Alexander Shaw (88) and James Larkin (72) scored the bulk of the runs.

Sydney University Fourths racked up 291 (Charles Cull 77 not out) and had Bankstown 3-70 in an interesting affair at St Paul’s College Oval, while Jarrod Waterlow led the way for Fifth Grade with an innings of 131 at Grahame Thomas Oval. The Students ended the day all out for 300.

The first round of the Poidevin-Gray Shield (Under 21s) was played on Sunday and Sydney University had encouraging start with a 71-run win over Mosman at Allan Border Oval.

Max Hope (55), Jonte Pattison (35) and James Madden (29 not out) helped Sydney University to 233 off their 50 overs before they rolled Mosman for 162 in 42 overs, with Joe Kershaw (3-17), Darius Visser (3-26) and Jonathon Dobson (2-28) the pick of the trundlers.

Meanwhile, Universities have been performing well in the Sydney Women’s Twenty20 competition with big wins in their first two games.

Universities accounted for Penrith by 68 runs in their opening match, with Leah Poulton (48), Rachael Haynes (41), Georgie Redmayne (40) and Kate Owen (22 not out) scoring the bulk of the 168 before they restricted Penrith to 9-100.

Redmayne top-scored with 73 as Universities rattled up 5-140 off their 20 overs in their Round 2 clash with Campbelltown-Camden, before restricting the westerners to 8-128, with Emily Mifsud taking 2-17 and Kate Coppack 2-21 in economical fashion.
