Sydney University and NSW all-rounder Sean Abbott could hold the key to the Students securing points against Manly-Warringah in the opening match of the 2014-15 season.

Abbott opened the bowling and the door for Sydney University, with his 3-28 off 12 miserly overs helping to restrict Manly-Warringah to 250 in their first innings at Manly Oval on Saturday.

He also opened the batting and was unbeaten on six when stumps were drawn with Sydney University 1-24 at the end of day one of the two-day fixture.

Will Somerville also helped the Students’ cause, capturing 4-76 off 31 overs, including the wickets of opener Cameron Merchant (nine) and No.1 Adam Crosthwaite (18) as the hosts slumped to 4-38.

The rescue mission came from No.4 Ahillen Beadle, who compiled a patient 90 in his 216-ball stay, Tim Cruickshank (59) and Jay Lenton (43).

Beadle hit 12 boundaries and a six in sharing stands of 92 with Lenton and 96 with Cruickshank.

While NSW openers Scott Henry, who made a quickfire 10, and Ryan Carters will be on NSW duties this Saturday, Sydney University still have plenty of batting to help Abbott push for first innings points, with Greg Mail, Nigel Cowell, Liam Robertson, Nick Larkin and Adam Theobald in the ranks.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Ben Trevor-Jones came to the rescue for Sydney University Seconds, cracking 115 at Sydney University No.1 Oval as the Students ended day one at 9-260.

Making his debut for the University, the former Hawkesbury player hit 10 boundaries and a six in his 182-ball stay and shared a 95-run partnership with Joe Kershaw (49).

Sydney University Thirds need a 300-run day at Graham Reserve next Saturday to secure first innings points. They were 0-2 at stumps on day one after Manly-Warringah declared late in the day at 4-301.

The Fourth Grade fixture at St Paul’s College Oval is interestingly poised, with Manly-Warringah a shaky 4-10 in reply to Sydney University’s first innings of 168.

Sydney University Fifths spent the first day of the season in the field, with Manly-Warringah going to stumps at 6-251; while Sydney University’s Metropolitan Cup side were 4-29 at stumps in reply to Western Suburbs’ 153.
