Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness athletes got off to a great start on the first day of EUG competition in Newcastle, with some outstanding results.

Our men’s basketball team showed that they are serious medal contenders with two massive wins today. The first was a 67-25 thrashing of ANU, and was then backed up later in the day to beat AVON 64-34.

Our women’s basketball team started off strongly beating UC in a convincing 70-26 display. The girl’s second game against NCLE was an extremely low scoring and tight game which ended in some controversy. The game went back and forth, each team exchanging buckets. After a mistake by the table and two shots not being counted, our women’s team lost 39-38. The girls will come out firing tomorrow and we are looking forward to them bouncing back from the tough loss.

Our men’s and women’s futsal teams were busy today with the women taking down ACU 10-2 followed by a tough battle against ACPE that saw the game ending in a 5-5 draw. The men were outstanding today, beating MQU 5-4 and then scoring a late last minute goal to beat CQU 5-4.

The men’s and women’s touch football teams both won two out of their three games, with the mixed team having one loss and one win. The touch teams have a great spirit down on the field and expect to see great results on day two.

The netball women were dominant today. They were clinical and it showed on the scoreboard with the team winning both their games by large margins. The mixed team had two losses and a win and showed great fight in all their games.

The Sydney Uni ultimate frisbee team were too strong for UWS and UC. Sydney Uni won two classy performances, not allowing any points to be scored against them in either games, winning 15-0 and 15-0. Tomorrow the team will clash with a very strong Newcastle team in what will be a great battle.

Our three lawn bowls teams had some mixed results with our number one and number three teams posting wins on day one. Day two will see all three lawn bowls teams back in action. It is great to see the Universities interacting with each other on the rink, with some great sportsmanship shown as well as some amusement for the spectators.

Our two surfers, James and Ben, have braved the cold winds and chilly water, to post great heats today. Both of them finished second in their heats and tomorrow will be battling against each other in the next round.
