Sydney Uni Wheelchair Flames stars Sarah Stewart and Stephanie van Leeuwen have been selected in the Australian Gliders women’s national wheelchair basketball team to complete at the 2014 IWBF Women’s World Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Toronto, Canada from 20-28 June.
Stewart (a three-time Paralympian, two-time World Championships representative, former SUSF EAP scholarship holder) and van Leeuwen (who will make her major tournament debut) will be hoping to deliver the Gliders their first World Championship medal since capturing bronze in 2002.
Having just completed a 10-game tour of Canada and the USA, the Gliders (who were represented by Stewart and van Leeuwen) will continue their preparations for the June World Championships when they take on National Wheelchair Basketball League (NWBL) teams in May before heading to Europe for a series of warm-up games and final hit outs.
The Gliders have drawn a tough pool for the preliminary rounds of the World Championships, facing The Netherlands, USA, Mexico, Peru and France.
Action tips off for the Gliders in the early hours of Saturday morning 21 June when they face the USA on the opening day of competition, beginning a run of five games in five days.
Preparations for June’s World Championships will see the Gliders head to Europe, where they will spend time in Germany and The Netherlands prior to settling in Toronto.
