The Sydney University Athletics Club (SUAC) has shown that their historic NSW Club Championships victory last year was no fluke, after they re-claimed the title on Saturday after recording arguably the most dominant victory in the events history.

The final points score at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre (SOPAC) saw SUAC on top with 1452.50 points, with UTS Norths in second place on 687.50 points.

In the men’s division SUAC were 361 points clear of second place UTS, while in the women’s division SUAC were over 400 points in front.

Incredibly, of the 35 competing clubs SUAC scored more points than the combined total of 27 clubs.

SUAC’s domination saw them win eight events on the day; the standout was the breakthrough performance of Ella Nelson who ran a personal best and Commonwealth Games B qualifer in the 200m. The SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder’s (Bachelor of Arts) time of 23.37 broke the SUAC club record for the women’s 200m, which has stood since 1986 and was held by Sue Hough (Nick Hough’s mum).

Other winners included Justin Merlino in the 110m hurdles, who was just outside the Commonwealth Games B standard running into a stiff headwind and Steph Langrigde in the pole vault.

SUSF EAP scholarship holders Derek Mulhearn (5000m walk and pole vault); Michelle Jenneke (100m hurdles), Nick Hough (200m) and Andrew Giltrap (shot put) all claimed victories on the day.

The NSW Club Championships victory completes a sweep of all senior Athletics NSW titles in both summer and winter in the 2013/14 season – a phenomenal achievement from the club.

SUAC athletes will this weekend travel to Canberra for the ACT Championships.
