Despite losing outright to Randwick-Petersham in their two-day, Round 7 clash at Petersham Oval at the weekend, Sydney University salvaged first innings points to retain the competition lead.
Having won the toss and batted, the Students posted a modest 209 on Saturday, with No.4 Liam Robertson (73), opener Scott Henry (71) and young leg-spinner Jonte Pattison (39 not out) providing the bulk of the runs.
Jake Wilson tore through the University line-up, finishing with 5-78, including the wickets of Nick Larkin, Greg Mail and David Miller, who all failed to score.
Randwick-Petersham were 3-84 at stumps on Saturday night and Tim Ley (5-59 and Mail (3-26) ensured Sydney University of first innings points when the hosts were rolled for 162 on Sunday. Nathan Price (49) and Shaun Eaton (38) were the main contributors.
University skipper Mail declared the second innings closed at 3-96, with Henry unbeaten on 56, and the hosts chasing 144 for victory.
Eaton (69 not out) and Price (63 not out) helped them knock off the deficit in 30.2 overs, with the hosts collecting six competition points for the outright and the Students earning four points for leading on the first innings.
Sydney University lead the competition on 38 points, with Penrith (36), Sydney (30), Campbelltown-Camden (30), Randwick-Petersham (30) and Bankstown (30) making up the top six.
Sydney University also lead the Club Championship on 627 points, from Randwick-Petersham (603) and Sydney (556).
Sydney University will host Gordon in a Limited Overs encounter at No.1 Oval on Saturday before the competition breaks for Christmas. The Students will then meet North Sydney at North Sydney Oval in another Limited Overs match on January 11.
