Sydney University started the Sydney grade cricket season with a bang, collecting first innings points in four of the five grades and taking an early lead in the Club Championship.
First Grade opener Scott Henry led the way with a brilliant, unbeaten 200 in Sydney University’s first innings win over Eastern Suburbs at Waverley Oval. Henry hit 27 boundaries and two sixes in his 378-minute occupation.
Greg Mail added 105 in a 246-run first-wicket partnership with Henry as the Students declared a 3-383 at stumps on day one. It was Mail’s 39th First Grade century, taking him to 13,144 First Grade runs at 52.52.
Will Somerville (3-17) and Tim Ley (3-63) helped dismiss Eastern Suburbs for 134 in their first innings, with Peter Nevill (61) and Kevin Pillay (31) providing the bulk of the runs.
Second Grade also collected first innings points after winning the toss, batting first and posting a big total.
Adam Theobald (94), Alex Logan (54) and Darius Visser (53) helped the Students to put on 308 for the first innings, before Tom Kierath (4-18), Ben Joy (3-77) and David Miller (2-15) restricted Eastern Suburbs to 195. Opener Matthew Yiend provided the bulk of Easts’ runs with a fighting 104.
Sydney University also collected first innings points in Third and Fifth grades, with Eastern Suburbs winning on the first innings in Fourth Grade.
Sydney University and Manly-Warringah lead the Club Championship on 102 points, with Bankstown on 92 and Penrith on 90.
Round two of the competition will be another round of two-day matches, with Sydney University taking on Campbelltown-Camden. First Grade will be played at Raby No.1 Oval.
