A whirlwind 103 from Erin Burn and an unbeaten 128 from Kara Sutherland highlighted Universities 189-run win over Gordon in their women’s Sydney grade limited overs match at Chatswood Oval on Saturday.
Burn cracked 17 boundaries in her 62-ball stay, while Sutherland – a former SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder – scored at a more sedate run-a-ball as they shared a 152-run second-wicket partnership which saw Universities finish with a mammoth 4-358 off their 50 overs.
Kate Owen also helped the cause with a 55-ball knock that produced 63 runs.
The Students then put Gordon to the sword, with Alison Parkin (4-23) and Emily Mifsud (3-27) helping to dispose of the hosts for 189, despite the efforts of opener Hannah Trollip, who was run out for 77.
Burn, a 2012 Sydney University Sport Scholarship holder on the Elite Athlete Program, was last week named Universities Women’s Batter of the Year in the Twenty20 competition, which the Students won. It was the first premiership in any grade since the club was formed with the amalgamation of the Sydney University and UNSW women’s clubs in 2003.
Universities Firsts are on target to take the double for 2012-13. They lead the limited overs competition by 18 points with four rounds to play. Universities Seconds are fifth on the ladder, while Thirds lead their competition.
