Despite a series of Herculean performances Sydney University has fallen just short of back-to-back Australian University Games titles after a titanic fifth and final day of completion in the wet and windy city of Adelaide.

Having already been named pennant champions (overall gold medal winners) in men’s and women’s athletics, women’s golf and men’s judo earlier this week, today Sydney University won a further seven sport gold medals, including two sensationally close extra time victories in women’s football and women’s hockey.

Other Sydney Uni teams who won gold today on the final day of competition were men’s and women’s water polo, women’s badminton, women’s tennis and men’s rugby 7s.

Despite a string of gold medal performances during the 20th anniversary of the Australian University Games, Sydney University has finished in equal second place overall with Monash University, and three gold medals behind winners Melbourne University at Australia’s largest annual multisport participation event in Australia.

Sydney Uni also picked up a number of silver and bronze medals today, including men’s hockey, men’s rowing, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cycling (silver), men’s badminton, men’s basketball and netball (bronze).

Yesterday, the Sydney Uni sailing team finished with a bronze medal after being narrowly defeated in an extremely close semi final race. They bounced back to win third in the bronze medal play-off.
