Sydney University Kendo Club member Walter Chung has won gold in the blackbelt individual tournament at the first ever UTS Shield event held on Saturday July 23.

Chung, a student from the University of Sydney, took out the gold medal despite competing against almost 30 competitors who were non-students and of much higher grades than most of his fellow club members.

All in all, the club entered 20 competitors, one of the largest entries to the competition.

In other news, on July 14 the club will be holding their annual charity competition – “USYD Kendo Cup: Kendo for a cause” – an all day event at the Sydney University Sports & Aquatic Centre (SUSAC).

The selected charity for this year’s competition will be the Heart Foundation, supporting research and awareness for cardiovascular disease – the most common cause of death in Australian women.
