Sydney University Elite Athlete Program (EAP) scholarship holder Sarah Stewart has been named tournament MVP as part of Australian Gliders wheelchair basketball team that claimed Gold in the Osaka Cup.
Stewart (PhD Philosophy) finished with 14 points and five rebounds in the 59-50 defeat of Canada in the gold medal game on Sunday in Japan.
Having beaten Canada earlier in the tournament, the Aussies were confident that they could get the job done at the business end of the tournament, but the Canadians pushed the Gliders in the first half, the Gliders taking a slender three-point lead into the half time break.
Canada continued to keep up with the Aussies, but the Gliders proved too strong, sealing the Osaka Cup win.
This tournament win comes on the back off the Gliders World Cup win late last year.
Stewart will now turn her attention to the Sydney Uni Wheelchair Flames attempting to win their tenth consecutive WNWBL championship.
Stewart and the Wheelchair Flames are playing three home games at the Sydney Uni Sports & Aquatic Centre between Friday March 16 and Sunday March 18.
Don’t miss out on your chance to see all of the WNWBL stars before they represent Australia at the 2012 London Olympics.
