A Greg Mail century backed up by a tight bowling performance helped defending premiers Sydney University open their account for the 2011-12 season with a first innings win over Blacktown at Joe McAleer Oval on Saturday.

Mail cracked 131 and Mark Faraday posted 73 as Sydney University piled on 328 in their first innings.

Tim Ley (3-27), Stuart Clark (2-12), Ian Moran (2-28) and Mail (2-30) then combined to dismiss the hosts for 135. Forced to follow on, Blacktown were 3-78 when stumps were drawn.

After opening the season with two two-day losses before winning a Twenty20 fixture against Randwick-Petersham, the win over Blacktown – and wins in the other four grades at the weekend – has helped move Sydney University to third on the Club Championship.

Penrith (312) and Manly-Warringah (294) are ahead of Sydney University, who are within striking distance on 288 points after three rounds.

Sydney University Seconds wrapped up first innings points after Will Hay (85) and Liam Robertson (48) helped the Students to 8(dec)-270 and Robertson (5-9) and Michael Culkoff (5-27) dismissed Blacktown for 77.

It was Culkoff’s third five-wicket haul in as many matches. He claimed another three scalps in the second innings which saw Blacktown follow-on and finish at 8-133 to avoid an outright loss.

Sydney University Thirds also just missed out on outright points. After declaring at 6-340, the Students dismissed Blacktown for 141 in their first innings and had them on the ropes 9-97 when stumps were drawn.

Fourth Grade claimed the only outright win in Sydney University’s clean sweep. After declaring at 8-288 on the back of Kevin Desai’s 137, the Students dismissed Blacktown for 47 (Darius Visser 5-4 and Charles Cull 3-12) and 84 (Charles Cull 4-12 and Stuart McLean 2-5) to grab the 10 points.

Sydney University Fifths had a comfortable first innings win. Chasing down Blacktown’s 9(dec)-224, the Students reached 3-229 on the back of 95 from Matt Skinner.

The other highlight of the weekend for Sydney University came in the Metropolitan Cup fixture on Sunday, when Greenshield (Under 16) players Wade Capps and Alex Toomey scored centuries in a high-scoring win over UNSW.

Chasing UNSW’s 8(dec)-302, left-hander Capps cracked 153 not out and right-hander Toomey scored 112 as Sydney University posted 1-322 to take the points.

While the Students welcomed the return of Stuart Clark in First Grade, they also welcomed the selection of batsman Nick Larkin in the NSW Second XI to play Western Australia in a Futures League match, and wicketkeeper James Crowley in the Combined Sydney Grade side to take on Combined Shires at the SCG this week.
