Champion rower Bronwen Watson can add another Oarswomen of the Year to her long list of achievements, after coming back from a self-imposed retirement in 2006.
Sydney University rowers conquered the NSW Rowing Association Awards last night, also taking out Oarsman of the Year’ – Matt Ryan and Francis Hegerty (joint winners), the Men’s Elite Shield, the Women’s Elite Shield, and the NSWRA Honours Recipient Trophy.
I love racing,” Watson said. “Despite the nerves, it’s a great pay-off to the hours of training. Racing is where you feel like everything is switched on. Competition is probably what I missed the most when I took time out.”
Watson inspires a club of successful rowers who have dominated at national and international regattas.
Seventeen Sydney University rowers are now preparing to represent Australia at the men’s and women’s World Championships in Poland, with Watson rowing in the women’s lightweight double scull.
Watson not only rows for the Sydney University Rowing Club, but also works as an executive assistant with Sydney Uni Sport and Fitness.
